Chris Booth Sculpture

In 1999 the Uralla Arts Council obtained an Australia Council grant to commission New Zealand sculptor, Chris Booth, to install a three-piece stone composition using local granite slabs. As an artist-in-residence, Chris completed his piece while living within the community, visiting local schools, giving public presentations, and visiting local artists. The granite for his piece was chosen from the Yarrowyck area, and the sculpture was completed in the Uralla Shire Council facility with the help of Council workers and equipment.

The Constellations of the South

This sculpture project is also sited at “The Glen”, a park at the northern entry to Uralla on The New England Highway, visible to passing traffic. The project, when completed, will incorporate a 19 metre high obelisk in stainless steel, sited to the axis of the Southern Constellations at the Summer Solstice. Arranged in a parabolic arc, with the obelisk at the centre, will be 8 granite boulders, each positioned to locate selected constellations in the southern sky. Artists will be invited to design and create a sculpture with community involvement through workshops and the process of the piece’s creation.

The sculptures atop the 2 initial boulders have being developed by Carl Merten and Joan Relke, 2 professional sculptors living in the area. Various bronze plaques describing and dedicating each structure’s constellation are designed and cast by the local Phoenix Foundry.  READ MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT HERE.
